The United States has no immigrant visa processing at all in a total of 67 countries, which means that applicants are obliged to travel long distances in order to attend a consular interview.
Such conclusions have been reached through the recent report provided by the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, VisaGuide.World reports.
The same has revealed that a total of 720 million people are at present living in countries without immigrant visa processing. At the same time, it has been emphasized that over the past ten years, authorities in the United States issued more than 400,000 visas to all people from these countries, also taking into account Norway, Iraq, Mozambique, and Venezuela.
The authors of the report said that if not for this hurdle, the number of visa issues to citizens of other countries would be higher.
According to the Cato Institute report, the average that applicants have to travel in order to attend an interview is 669 miles, while it emphasizes that sometimes the distance is greater.
There is no embassy or consulate in a total of 24 countries in the United States, while the report notes that the largest in the group is North Korea, together with Palestine and other island nations and states.
In another country, more specifically, in 12 countries, the United States Department has closed the consulates, while it has been reported that recently authorities in the US closed their embassies in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia.
At the same time, another 28 countries have a consulate offering services for citizens; however, it only processes non-immigrant or temporary visas to the United States.
“The final three embassies (4 per cent) without routine immigrant visa processing offer no visas at all (Central African Republic) and very limited nonimmigrant visa processing (Timor‐Leste and South Sudan),” the statement of the Cato Institute reads.
At the same, it has been reported that the following countries, based on the list of nationalities that the US recognizes for purposes of processing non-immigrant or temporary visas, are without an immigrant visa processing consulate:
Afghanistan
Andorra
Antigua and Barbuda
Azerbaijan
Belarus
Bhutan
Botswana
Brunei
Burundi
Central African Republic
Chad
Comoros
Denmark
Dominica
Equatorial Guinea
Eritrea
Eswatini
The report suggests that authorities in the US offer virtual interviews and also permit immigrant visa applicants to interview at consulates as well as embassies that only process non-immigrant visas.
