The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the introduction of several measures that will be taken regarding the H-1B visa scheme following reports of the abuses related to the lottery.
Among the measures that the DHS will take are administrative fraud investigations into organizations that are suspected of colluding in order to improve prospective employees’ chances in the selection process, VisaGuide.World reports.
In addition, DHS will start making law enforcement referrals for criminal prosecution to suspected violator companies and also will intend to amend relevant regulations related to the H1-B lottery registrations as announced in the Unified Regulatory Agenda and Regulatory Plan in 2021.
The H-1B visa, or Person in Specialty Occupation Visa, is a temporary work visa that permits US employers to hire qualified workers for specialty jobs, such as architects, IT specialists, professors, and doctors, as well as lawyers and accountants, among others.
Previously, United States Congresswoman Linda Sanchez introduced a new Citizenship Act that seeks to lift the country quota for green cards while also applying new changes to the H-1B visa system.
The new act presented by the Democratic Party proposes agricultural workers, as well as dreamers, among others, an immediate path to citizenship.
Recently it was reported that the H-1B electronic registration system is experiencing a surge in interest in the H-1B program.
But previously, the United States Federal Agency detected fraud and abuse in this program while stressing that some companies committed fraud in order to artificially boost their possibility of winning the visa for their workers from other countries.
Besides, a user on the Reddit platform published a list of 128 consultancies that take the money of the applicants in order to fill multiple H-1B visa applications without a genuine job offer.
“I put up a list of fraud consultancies and their contact information. This list consists of 128 consultancies applying multiple applications or scamming applicants by getting their money. If you are a genuine applicant and did not get an H-1B visa this year, please don’t be hard on yourself,” the user emphasized.
The annual H-1B visa allocations are capped at 85,000, of which 20,000 are dedicated to those holding advanced degrees from institutions in the US, while 65,000 are approved on a lottery basis.
Previously, US Congressman Shri Thander urged the United States Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, to increase the annual cap in order to increase the number of international workers in the US.
