US Imposes New Rules for Indians to Reduce Long Visa Waiting Period

Authorities in the United States have introduced new rules for citizens of India in order to shorten the waiting period.

According to a report provided by Business Today, the United States has taken additional measures, such as arranging special interviews for first-time applicants as well as expanding the strength of consular workers, in order to reduce delays in processing visas, VisaGuide.World reports.

Even though there have been made several efforts in order to reduce the backlog, the waiting time for a Unites States appointment in India is still more than 500 days. Therefore, the United States embassy in India has urged Indians traveling overseas to make an appointment at the United States embassy or consulate of their final destination.

“Do you have upcoming international travel? If so, you may be able to get a visa appointment at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your destination. For example, @USEmbassyBKK has opened B1/B2 appointment capacity for Indians who will be in Thailand in the coming months,” the United States embassy in India pointed out in this regard.

Besides, authorities in the United States have imposed additional steps, such as arranging special interviews for first-time applicants as well as further expanding the strength of consular workers in order to reduce delays in the processing of visas.

Recently, it was reported that more than 2,50,000 new B1 and B2 visa appointments were released in India. B-1 visas are also known as business visas, while the B-2 visa is dedicated to all persons who plan to travel for tourism purposes.

Earlier this month, authorities in the United States announced that visa renewal applications can now be submitted through dropbox.

Such an announcement was made by the United States Embassy while stressing that these requests would not be entertained through email.

In addition, John Ballard, a consular chief at the United States General in Mumbai, said that the United States Embassy and consulates in India have prepared to receive a large number of students from India this year.

A previous report provided by the Economic Times notes that the US Embassy processed over 1,125,000 visas this year.

“It was the most students that we have ever adjudicated here in India, and, we expect in 2023, we will have even more Indian students that will be coming into apply for visas,” Ballard stressed regarding the issue.

US officials are continuously working to facilitate the travel process for all internationals by reducing wait times.
