United States Congresswoman, Linda Sanchez, has introduced a Citizenship Act that seeks to abolish the country quota for green cards while also applying new changes to the H-1B visa system.
The new act of the Democratic party proposes dreamers, agricultural workers, as well as recipients of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) an immediate path to citizenship, VisaGuide.World reports.
The recent changes introduced to fix the United States immigration system aim to help a large number of undocumented immigrants who are currently living in this county.
The US offers a large number of visa types, therefore allowing a large number of internationals to live and work in the US legally. Green card and H-1B visas are among the most famous programs offered by the US.
The green card, known as the Permanent Resident Card, offers the opportunity to live and work in the US permanently in a legal way.
On the other hand, the H-1B visa, known as a Specialty in Occupation Visa, is a temporary work visa that permits United States employers to hire qualified workers from other countries engaged in specific fields such as architects, IT specialists, accountants as well as lawyers, and doctors.
Sanchez’s new Citizenship Act also aims to create a program in order further to help the development of the country’s economy and encourage higher wages for non-immigrant, high-skilled visas, according to the Economic Times report.
In addition, the new changes to the Citizenship Act also aim to offer protection for orphans as well as widows and children and also permit immigrants with approved family sponsorship to join the family in the United States temporarily while they wait for green cards.
“As the daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico, I am honored to introduce the United States Citizenship Act today… a bold, transformative framework that will finally fix our broken immigration system,” Sanchez pointed out in a statement, according to the Economic Times India report.
She stressed that the act would help the US economy grow, make the country’s borders safer and more secure, and also deliver a pathway to citizenship for a large number of immigrants who are already living and working in the United States.
While calling for an immigration law overhaul, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries underlined the role of immigrants in the US.
“We do have a broken immigration system here in the US, and it does require a thoughtful and comprehensive solution, an approach that is anchored in our values as a country based on two pillars,” Jeffries pointed out.
A report by DT Next says that foreign-born workers account for a total of 17 percent of the workforce, while undocumented workers account for nearly 4.4 percent.
