The recent analysis by Travel Intelligence Services, Mabrian, has revealed that the top destination for Russian travelers in 2022 was Türkiye.
The study was carried out based on such criteria as the demand for hotels by Russian travelers and the average price of a hotel room in more than 700 destinations around the world during the past year compared to the trends of 2019, VisaGuide.World reports.
In order to come up with the results, Mabrian’s team used its Travel Intelligence platform to analyze more than two million reviews posted by Russians and published hotel prices on major OTAs such as Booking, Expedia and TripAdvisor over the past two years.
According to Mabrian, in addition to Türkiye, the tourist destinations of the Middle East and Asia that are gaining importance amongst Russians are also the United Arab Emirates and Thailand. At the same time, Georgia, Armenia and Kazakhstan also became part of the 20 most preferred destinations for Russians in 2022.
As for European destinations, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, and Greece have had a negative impact, thus showing a drastic decrease in the presence of Russian tourists visiting these destinations during 2019. Of these affected countries, Italy was the destination that was hit the most last year compared to 2019.
As Mabrian explains, the factors that have influenced Russians not to visit European destinations are mainly the impact of sanctions on Russians and the difficulties of traveling from Russia to Europe due to EU and Great Britain visa restrictions as well as the ban on direct flights to these places because of the war in Ukraine.
In addition, the drop in the value of the ruble during the summer of last year had a big negative impact, especially considering that the average price of hotels in Italy is, on average, 46 per cent higher than the average price in Türkiye.
“As one of the largest source markets for international tourism over the last 20 years, the Russian market plays a crucial role in the global travel industry, and in recent times it has become essential for destinations and companies to understand their evolving trends and preferences,” the Director of Marketing & Sales of Mabrian Carlos Cendra pointed out in this regard.
Moreover, the study conducted by Mabrian shows that the Russian travel market has been deeply affected by the current situation. This means that Russian tourists are more inclined to explore new destinations in the Middle East, Asia and neighboring countries.
