The number of nationals of Cameroon applying for the US Diversity Visa Lottery, which is also known as the Green Card Lottery, has increased significantly this year.
According to activists in Cameroon, the number of Cameroonians applying for the US Diversity visa has increased by 60 percent, and it has been noted that the main reason for this is the country’s poor economy and separatist conflict, VisaGuide.World reports.
VOA News explains that thousands of citizens of Cameroon have been lining up at internet cafes to complete their applications and stresses that people who already have stable jobs are applying too.
A teacher in her twenties who is among those applying for the program said for VOA News that she wants to leave her country for better economic opportunities and to be able to take care of her family.
While the number of applicants remains high, the Digital Rights Coalition has advised all nationals of Cameroon applying for the lottery to be aware of scammers who charge a high amount to give unhelpful advice.
The country’s police have said that some scammers have already been arrested and have recommended that applicants avoid getting help from people they do not know.
The US Diversity Visa allows people from countries that have low immigration rates to the US to be randomly selected and obtain permanent resident status.
The program is not specific to certain countries or to one continent. Instead, nationals from all geographic regions can apply for the visa. The number of Diversity Visas is limited, and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services decide each year on the number of visas that will be granted.
Those who are winners of the visa are considered Lawful Permanent Residents of the US, which makes them eligible to live in any of the states and find a job, among others.
Those who wish to apply for the Diversity Visa must make sure to meet certain requirements. According to the US authorities, all applicants must be from one of the countries allowed to apply for the program.
In addition, applicants must be at least 18 years old to apply as the head of the household, they must have completed high school, and must have at least two years of work experience in the last five years in one of the occupations that fall into Job Zone 4 or 5.
The selection process for this year’s application will take place next year in May 2023.
The lucky ones who get selected must start their application for the Diversity Visa. They must submit the visa application form, compile supporting documents, complete a medical examination, and attend the interview.
