New Travel Requirements for Visiting Tibet: China Tightens Rules for International Tourists

Internationals planning to visit Tibet are required to form groups to tour the Autonomous Region in addition to their China visa after China has tightened rules for those interested in visiting Tibet from Nepal.

According to an openpr.com report, the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu has tightened the review of China Group Visa for all crossing over from Nepal, VisaGuide.World reports.

The Chinese Group visa is needed for all international tourists reaching Tibet from Nepal, and it is issued by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.

With this group visa of China, travelers are eligible to obtain the Tibet Travel Permit issued by Tibet Tourism Bureau and then travel in Tibet following the predetermined itinerary.

The Travel Permit, also known as Tibet Entry Permit or Tibet Visa, is a travel permit dedicated to international tourists planning to reach Tibet, in addition to a Chinese visa.

The Tibetan Review report shows that in the past, travelers in Kathmandu were able to easily apply for a Chinese Group visa through a travel agency after the review process was not strict. At the same time, applicants were not required to be present in person.

However, since April last month, the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu has been reviewing this type of visa more strictly.

At the same time, the number of applicants in a group must be over four persons. In addition, applicants are also required to go to the embassy for an interview and also have their fingerprints taken.

Currently, the only international flights to Tibet’s Lhasa from Kathmandu are not eligible. This means that travelers are only eligible to fly to China and then take a flight to Tibet. Tourists from the United Kingdom, as well as those from France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, and other European countries, are eligible to take an international flight to Beijing, Guangzhou Chengdu, as well as other cities in China.

In addition, the Newswires report shows that travelers from Southeast Asian countries, such as Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam as well as Thailand, are able to take international flights to mainland China, such as Shanghai as well as Shenzhen, and then fly to Lhasa.

At the same time, passengers from the United States and Canada, such as Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, etc., are eligible to take an international flight to Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and other territories and then fly to Tibet’s Lhasa.

Authorities in Tibet previously announced the opening of tourism season to all foreigners on April 7.
