A total of 1.82 million international workers have been registered in Japan as of the end of October 2022, marking a total 5.5 per cent increase compared to the figures of the same period in 2021, the data provided by the country’s government revealed.
Last year’s statistics show that Japan managed to keep a large number of foreign workers despite the significant impact caused by the spread of the Coronavirus and its new strains, VisaGuide.World reports.
However, the figures revealed that the year-on-year increase was notably below the 13.5 per cent increase recorded before the spread of COVID-19 and its new variants.
In this regard, a labour ministry official told Japan Times that the growth slowed in 2020 amid the spread of COVID-19.
The recent figures provided by the government reveal that citizens of the following countries accounted for the largest number of international workers registered in Japan last year:
Vietnam – 25.4 per cent or 25.4 percent of the total number of foreign workers
China – 385,848 or 21.2 percent
Philippine- 206,050 or 11.3 percent
It was reported that a total of 298,790 workplaces in Japan employed workers from other countries, marking an increase of 4.8 percent. In addition, businesses that had fewer than 30 workers that account for over 90 percent of firms in this country had 61.4 per cent of the employers from other countries.
International workers engaged in the manufacturing industry accounted for a quarter of the total or a surge of 4.2 percent for the first time in three years.
It has been emphasized that the number of foreign workers marked an increase of 3.9 percent in specific industries such as wholesale as well as retail industry, while the restaurant and lodging industry accounted for a total of 2.7 percent increase.
According to a Japan Times report, by residency status, holders of specialist, as well as engineer visas, marked a 21.7 percent increase to 479,949 international workers registered. It has been emphasized that working holders of visas such as permanent residents as well as spouses of Japanese nationals marked a 2.6 percent increase to 595,207 people.
The most significant decline was noted in technical interns to 343,254 people or a percent decrease.
It was reported that Tokyo welcomed the largest number of international workers or 500,089 foreign workers, followed by Achi Prefecture with a total of 188,691 foreign workers and Osaka Prefecture with 124,570 people.
