Indian nationals benefited the most from student visas issued by authorities in the United Kingdom last year.
According to British High Commissioner to India, Alex Ellis, out of 2,836, 490 visas that authorities in Britain issued last year, 25 percent were issued to citizens of India, while New Delhi also registered the highest number of student visas, VisaGuide.World reports.
In addition, Ellis noted that in 2021, there was a total of 73 percent increase in student visas, while work visas saw a total of 130 percent increase.
“Last year the UK issued 2,836,490 visas; 25 percent of those went to India, more than to any other country. Indian nationals received: highest student visas increased by 73 percent in 2021, most work visas increased by 130 percent, the largest share of visit visas, 30 percent of the world,” the British High Commissioner pointed out, according to the Economic Times report.
Based on the statistics of the UK’s government, regarding visitor visas, Indian nationals have surpassed Chinese nationals, who were on top of the list in this category, before the spread of the Coronavirus and its new strain, accounting for a total of 27 percent of the visas granted in 2019, but decreased to five percent last year.
In addition to India, other top five visitor visa nationalities are the following: Nigeria (7 percent), South Africa, Pakistan, and Turkey (six percent each).
Authorities in the United Kingdom have introduced new measures in order to bring to the country a larger number of migrants, despite reports of curbing immigration.
The United Kingdom previously launched the UK-India Young Professionals Scheme, enabling a total of 3,000 Indian nationals aged between 18 and 30 to live and work in Britain for a period of two years. Such a decision was confirmed by the Prime Minister of Britain, Rishi Sunak.
“I know first-hand the incredible value of the deep cultural and historical ties we have with India. I am pleased that even more of India’s brightest young people will now have the opportunity to experience all that life in the UK has to offer – and vice-versa – making our economies and societies richer,” Sunak, Britain’s first Indian-origin Prime Minister, pointed out.
In addition, last year, the High Commission of India in Britain revealed that the country decided to start rolling e-Visas again for those who hold a passport of Britain.
In a statement provided by the High Commission of India on its official Twitter account, the e-Visa facility would permit all nationals of Britain to travel to India while the same pointed out that the visa website would soon be ready to receive applications.
