Canada to Permit Visitors to Apply for Work Permits Without Leaving the Country Until 2025

The government of Canada has said that foreigners who are in Canada as visitors and who receive a job offer while in the country will continue to be able to apply for as well as receive a work permit without being required to leave.

This policy was planned to remain in place temporarily. However, taking into account the labor shortages Canada is experiencing, the authorities have decided to extend the policy for another two years until 2025, VisaGuide.World reports.

“Set to expire today, this COVID-era temporary public policy has been extended by two years until February 28, 2025. Leaving this temporary policy in place makes visitors an option for employers in Canada, as many are facing significant labor shortages during this period of economic expansion,” the statement of the government of Canada reads.

The same has stressed that visitors to Canada who held a work permit within the last year (the last 12 months) will also continue to be permitted to request temporary work authorization to begin working as soon as possible.

The extension of this policy will make it easier for all foreigners, regardless of their nationality, to obtain a work permit and start working in Canada, even if they have entered the country for tourism purposes.

Before the government decided to introduce such a policy, all those who applied to work in Canada had to apply for their work permit before arriving in Canada. In cases when foreigners were already in Canada with a visitor status and were approved for a work permit, they had to leave Canada in order to be granted the work permit.

In order to be eligible to apply for a work permit with a visitor status in Canada, the applicants have a valid visitor status in Canada on the day they apply for the document.

Moreover, they must have a job offer supported by an LMIA-exempt offer of employment or a labor market impact assessment. Applicants are also required to submit an application no later than February 28, 2025, when this policy is set to end, and they must also meet all the other admissibility criteria.

Canada has consistently been making changes to its policy in order to make it easier for foreigners to take up jobs in the country. Earlier in February, Canada decided to extend as well as expand the open work permit program for residents of Hong Kong.

All residents of Hong Kong who have graduated in the last ten years from any Canadian or other post-secondary learning institution will be able to benefit from the new change.
