People applying for immigration routes to Canada will be able to take the Pearson Test of English (PTE) by the end of this year.
As the Pie News reports, the PTE test will join CELPIP and IELTS General Training in late 2023 as one of three designated language tests that economy class candidates will be able to complete to demonstrate their skills in English for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), VisaGuide.World reports.
Pearson has created the new PTE Essential English language test to meet IRCC’s language proficiency requirements for Canadian immigration applicants.
Yet, for applicants who wish to have a study permit IRCC has different language criteria, which means that international students generally have to take the “Academic” version of a language proficiency test.
“At Pearson, we see every day how English skills can transform lives. We’ve already seen how PTE Academic can help people take a huge stride towards being themselves in English in whichever country they choose to work or study,” Andy Bird, CEO at Pearson pointed out in this regard.
He also added that he feels happy and proud that PTE Essential is now accepted in Canada for economic visas, for the innovation and rigor behind the fast and high-quality experience this test provides for test-takers.
The United Kingdom, Australian and New Zealand governments currently accept PTE Academic for all visa applications, as well as almost all universities in those countries, and over 90 per cent of Canadian universities.
Last year, Canada granted a record 437,000 permanent resident permits, a figure that was roughly nine per cent higher than in 2021.
In the coming years the government also plans to accept an increasing number of new permanent residents, reaching 500,000 in 2025 alone.
IRCC also revealed that PTE Essential is coming at a good time for test takers and opens up new opportunities for Pearson as a high demand in Canada will be for professionals in fields such as nursing, engineering and web development.
Furthermore, test-takers can book their tests online up to 24 hours in advance, so they can take advantage of test center seats year-round and still receive their results in an average of 1.3 days.
PTE Essential will be available across Pearson’s existing network of more than 400 PTE centers in 118 countries as well.
