Australia’s government is planning to introduce a new proposal which would facilitate the process of bringing highly skilled staff to the country, for all global companies.
According to an SBS report, the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) is backing the easing of this process for intra-companies, VisaGuide.World reports.
The new changes are planned to be introduced in order to help Australia fill in the labour shortage gaps noted in many industries.
In this regard, the Chief Economist of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), Jarrod Ball, stressed that the US as well as the UK already had clear paths for multinational companies in order to bring talent into those countries in a fast way and through a streamlined process.
A total of 116,000 intracompany visas or L1 visas were granted by authorities in the United States in 2021, despite the fact that the figures were significantly higher before the spread of the Coronavirus and its new variants, as well as COVID-related restrictions imposed to contain its further spread.
Ball said that implementing a similar pathway in Australia would open the doors to a larger number of investments.
“Generally multinational, large companies are trusted users of the visa system, and they tend to facilitate a fair bit of foreign investment and also knowledge transfer across their workforces,” Ball stressed regarding the issue.
Australia’s L1 non-immigrant visa permits international businesses to transfer certain employees to a United States branch, parent or subsidiary or affiliate company in the United States. It permits international companies to transfer an executive, a manager, or a person with specialized knowledge to a United States company.
In addition, the Minister of Immigration, Citizenship, and Migrant Services as well as Multicultural Affairs, Andrew Giles, ordered the country’s Department of Home Affairs, to fast-track visa applications that would be an adequate response to the shortage of skilled workers.
The Minister said that the community together with the previous government expressed concerns for several years regarding the profound delays in processing visa applications.
“Processing outstanding visa applications is a priority for the Australian government. We are committed to ensuring that visa applications are processed in a timely manner,” the Minister pointed out, according to a report published by Winny Immigration.
According to a report provided by SBS, the main occupations for temporary skilled visas granted by authorities of Australia for a period between July and September 2022, were software engineers, ICT business analysts, resident medical officers, chefs as well as developer programmers.
