The Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed that there were a total of 1,639,000 temporary visa holders in the country in August 2021, with 1,614,000 being temporary residents and 25,000 being overseas visitors.
According to the Bureau of Statistics of Australia, temporary residents in Australia on Census night 2021 included mainly foreigners residing in the country for at least 12 months on temporary students, skilled, working holiday, and Special Category visas, VisaGuide.World reports.

Commenting on the figures, the head of migrant statistics at the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Jenny Dobak, said that the majority of temporary visa holders in Australia on Census night 2021 were proficient in English.
The same noted that around 39 per cent of those on a temporary resident visa on Census night 2021 held a bachelor’s degree or higher.
“Today’s data highlights the characteristics of temporary residents in Australia, with results showing that 92 percent of people were proficient in English. Almost two in five temporary residents, or around 39 percent, held a bachelor’s degree or higher, with around half of the students and just under two-thirds of temporary skilled visa holders holding at least a bachelor’s degree,” the statement of Dobak reads.
Data provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics further show that careers and aides was the most common occupation for employed temporary residents, with 66,000 people having this occupation.
The top ten list of the most common occupations for employed temporary residents include road and rail drivers (53,100), cleaners and laundry workers (52,500), sales assistants and salespersons (47,600), food trades workers (47,400), business, human resource and marketing professionals (45,600), specialist managers (40,000), hospitality workers (38,200), factory process workers (38,000), and health professionals (34,900).
In addition to the above-mentioned, data has shown that ICT professionals were the most common people who held a temporary skilled visa (12 percent).
As for the most common industry of employment for employed temporary residents, it has been shown that it was food and beverage services (12 percent), with 23 percent of students working in this industry.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics further disclosed that the majority of temporary residents lived in capital cities, with Sydney registering the highest number – 25,900. The city was followed by Melbourne (23,700), Brisbane (13,500), Perth (9,000), Adelaide (3,800), and Hobart (1,000).
