Australia Increases Working Holiday Visa Age Limit for UK Citizens

Authorities in Australia have decided to facilitate their rules on working holiday visas for nationals of the United Kingdom by increasing the holiday visa age for the latter’s citizens.

Australia has agreed to increase the age limit for Britons from 30 to 35 in December 2021; however, the amendment is still not effective.

But starting from May 31, the new changes will become effective, thus allowing Australia two years to implement them, VisaGuide.World reports.

At present, applicants must be 30 or younger, but with the new rules set out in the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement, Britons over 35 years old will be eligible to apply for the visa. According to a Euronews report, this could begin any time between next month and May 2025.

Australia’s working holiday visa gives young people from other countries the opportunity to travel to Australia and work there for a specific period of time.

The visa, which permits foreigners to benefit from it without being obliged to be registered as a resident in this territory,  is eligible for people between 18 and 30 years old and valid for one year.

The working holiday visa can be renewed twice, but in order for the extensions to be granted, applicants are required to carry out “specified work” for a period of three to six months.

It differs based on the region, but it is conducted in a place outside the main cities and can be in the fields of tourism, hospitality, as well as agriculture, and construction.

Once the new changes become effective, the visa will also be eligible for people up to 35 years old. Specified work conditions will be abolished while the maximum six months period despite the fact that the maximum six months per employer requirement will still be kept in place.

Euronews report revealed that for a period from July until December last year, authorities in Australia issued more than 15,000 working holiday visas for citizens from the UK, thus accounting for the main beneficiaries from this scheme, followed by French nationals, with a total of 10,474 visas, followed by Ireland (7,410), Germans (6,436), as well as Italians (5,753).

Authorities in Australia last year increased the number of available holiday visas for citizens of Denmark as well as Italy and also increased the upper age limit from 30 to 35 years old.

At present, the following countries benefit from Australia’s holiday working visas: Canada, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, France, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Republic of Korea, Norway, Netherlands, Sweden, Taiwan as well as the UK.
