Over 5,000 pregnant women reached Argentina in recent months, taking also into account 33 of them on a single flight last Thursday, thus becoming a problem for authorities in this country.
Authorities in Argentina have expressed concerns regarding the large number of Russian women in their final weeks of pregnancy who are attempting to reach this territory in order to give birth and thus acquire citizenship.
In addition, officials have claimed that three Russian spies who were detained in Slovenia also came from the South American country, VisaGuide.World reports.
Under the current rules applied by the Argentinian authorities, all persons born in Argentine acquire nationality at birth. However, there are some exceptions to this rule such as for children of those in the service of an international government, including foreign diplomats.
Recently, authorities in Argentina banned the entry of six pregnant women from Russia who planned to reach this state for the same purpose, adding that they held falsely claimed to be visitors.
The National Director for Migration, Florencia Carignano has also confirmed for the CTV news that the authorities are concerned regarding the spike in the number of pregnant women reaching Argentinian borders a few weeks, or even days before their scheduled day of delivery.
It has also been reported that at least some of these women initiated legal proceedings in order to be eligible to enter this territory.
“These women who didn’t commit a crime, who didn’t break any migratory law, are being illegally deprived of their freedom,” Christian Rubilar, representing three of the six women detained at the Ezeiza International Airport outside Buenos Aires pointed out in this regard, according to CTV news report.
The pregnant women from Russia who have spent at least one night in Argentina’s airport facilities brought into focus the issue that has recently become evident.
“The quantity really is very big each day, only last night in the last Ethiopian (Airlines) flight, 33 Russian citizens entered with pregnancies of approximately 32, 33, 34 weeks,” the National Director for Migration, Florencia Carignano, pointed out in this regard.
It has been reported that in 2022, at least 21,757 citizens from Russia reached Argentina, taking also into account about 10,500 pregnant women, while Carignano emphasized that the numbers have marked a significant increase in the last few months. According to her, in the last three months, about 5,819 pregnant women entered Argentina.
The notable increase in number of Russian pregnant women planning to give birth to their babies in Argentina increased notably while local media reports consider that it is all a result of the current situation in Russia caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the latter is subject to sanctions which often are considered the harshest imposed in recent years.
