Albania Approves New Law to Attract Digital Nomads: Work Legally & Tax-Free

Albania’s Parliamentary Commission for Economy and Finance has approved several changes to the law “On the Support and Development of Startups” No.25/2022, that aim further to ease the life of digital nomads in this country.

The new changes mean that all those persons attracted by remote work now have a secure and legal ground to work in Albania, VisaGuide.World reports.

According to Albania Tech’s report, digital workers will not be considered tax residents of Albania for 12 months on the condition that they are excluded from taxes for one year.

The same notes that all digital nomad workers are subject to a permit under the law “On foreigners” and its implementing sub-legal acts.

“This incentive package for digital nomad workers is an additional contribution to the digitalization reforms in Albania and comes as a joint effort with the Ministry of Finance and Economy. Such a favorable environment makes this country a very attractive destination for this category of digital experts, which is surging in number after the pandemic”, the state minister for Entrepreneurship Protection, Edona Bilali, pointed out in this regard.

The average annual income of digital nomads varies; however, nearly 35 percent of them earn between $50,000 and $100,000 per year.

International digital nomads employed abroad, as well as self-employed persons engaged in remote work, together with students and researchers, among others, are eligible to benefit from Albania’s Digital Nomad Visa.

The Digital Nomad Visa permits all those interested in remote work to remain in a lawful way in Albania while working for companies or clients located outside the country.

The program, among others, aims to help the country’s economic sector growth which has also been highly affected by the spread of the Coronavirus and its new variants.

According to a report of Nomad Island, at present, internationals planning to live in Albania are required to send separate applications; one from the Labor Office and another from the Border and Migration Police; however, the application for Unique Permit will only be submitted to a single authority which is considered a more convenient option for digital nomads.

All those holding United States passports are eligible to stay in Albania for a period of more than a year without being required to apply for a visa at first. At the same time, digital nomads from Australia, Canada, Japan, Israel, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, as well as European countries are eligible to stay in Albania for more than 90 days without holding a visa.
