Canada Prolongs & Expands Open Work Permit Program for Hongkongers

Authorities in Canada have decided to continue to extend and expand the open work permit program in order to bring to the country a more significant number of residents from Hong Kong.

The decision has been confirmed through a statement provided by Canada’s government, while the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, has emphasized that the country continues to stand by Hong Kong residents and backs freedom as well as a democracy that is cherished by many, VisaGuide.World reports.

The statement confirms that all residents from Hong Kong who have graduated within the past ten years from any post-secondary learning institution in Canada or abroad will be eligible to benefit from the recent changes.

The new changes also mean that a larger number of Hong Kongers are eligible to pursue their career goals and also have valuable work experience in Canada for a period of more than three years, while previous applicants were required to graduate within five years.

Authorities in Canada are also attempting to attract a larger number of skilled workers, also taking into account those who have already acquired work experience, which allows them to become part of the country’s workforce through two pathways to permanent residence for eligible Hong Kong applicants.

“Canada will continue to support the many meaningful exchanges between Canada and Hong Kong while standing up for the people of Hong Kong. By extending and expanding Canada’s open work permits for Hong Kongers, we are giving Canadian employers more skilled workers to hire at a time when we need them most and providing valuable work experience, all while also showing our support for the people of Hong Kong,” Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship pointed out in this regard.

At the same time, the Member of Parliament for Scarborough- Agincourt, Jean Yip, said that at a time when the world is being subject to a large number of challenges, Canada continues its commitment to supporting citizens’ rights and freedoms in all countries.

As for the recent changes, Yip said that the expansion of open work permits, as well as the creation of pathways to residency for residents from Hong Kong, are a testament to this commitment while stressing that they will help to bring even more skilled and talented people to Canada.

The decision to extend and expand the open work program for residents from Hong Kong has also been welcomed by the Member of Parliament for Don Valley North, Han Dong, while emphasizing that the demand for these visas continues to grow.
