USCIS Introduces Trial for Updates to Naturalization Test

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has revealed that the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is looking to conduct a trial for updates regarding the current naturalization test.

USCIS has revealed that the test consists of four components: writing, reading, civics as well as the ability to speak, VisaGuide.World reports.

While the reading and writing components are standard, USCIS plans to test a civics component with the updated format, content, and a recently developed English-speaking component that might become standard in the future.

USCIS has introduced these changes following Executive Order 14012 of President Biden, which consists of a directive to review the naturalisation process which is considered the key to becoming a citizen of the US.

“The naturalization test is a key step in becoming a U.S. citizen. We welcome input from – and the participation of – stakeholders who are familiar with this important process, as we continue to improve and update our naturalization test, ensuring that it is consistent with industry testing standards,” USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou pointed out in this regard.

It has been reported that the updates to the naturalization test are based on feedback from stakeholders regarding the standardisation of the naturalisation test.

“USCIS will conduct the trial with the help of volunteer community-based organizations (CBOs) who work with immigrant English language learners and lawful permanent residents preparing for naturalization,” the statement reads.

It was also reported that the agency urges about 1,500 people to engage in adult education classes in order to take the trial test. At the same time, results will be used in order to support the changes to the naturalisation test.

Executive Order 14012, Restoring Faith in Our Legal Immigration Systems and Strengthening Integration and Inclusion Efforts for New Americans, in section one, among others notes that more than 40 million foreigners live in the United States and are engaged in different fields. It emphasized that these people have helped the US lead the world in different fields such as science, technology and innovation.

Thus, the order notes that the US must ensure that the laws and policies encourage full participation by immigrants as well as refugees. It also notes that the Federal Government should eliminate the barriers that ban immigrants from accessing government services eligible to them.

The executive order also notes that the Secretary of State, as well as the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland and Security, are required to review existing regulations as well as orders and other documents and policies if they are not consistent with the approach mentioned in section one of this order.

It has also been revealed that the officials mentioned above should also review all the actions of the agency related to the implementation of the public charge ground of administrability.

All persons who are born outside the US are eligible to become citizens of the United States through the naturalisation process, provided they meet specific conditions, among them, being 18 years of age or more, being able to write, read and speak basic English and have a lawful permanent resident in the past three or five years.
