Authorities in Canada have announced that they will extend the scope of work permits that the country grants to temporary international workers in order to permit spouses of work permit holders to work in Canada.
Canadian authorities have confirmed that such a decision will enter into function starting next year, VisaGuide.World reports.
In this regard, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship in Canada has stressed that his department is planning to extend work permits to family members to temporary international workers from next year.
Such an initiative has raised North American hopes to facilitate the labour shortage that the Canadian economy is experiencing. Before the announcement, the authorities and spouses were only allowed to benefit from a work permit in case the applicant was working in a high-skill occupation.
“This temporary measure aims to improve the emotional well-being, physical health and financial stability of workers by keeping families together. As a result, it is expected that the worker will better integrate into their overall work environment and community,” the IRCC pointed out in a statement regarding the issue.
According to a report provided by Times Now News, the recently introduced measures will become effective in three of the following phases:
Family members of workers coming to this country through the high-wage stream of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program or the International Mobility Program who will be able to file an application for an open work permit
Facilitation of rules for all those family members of those who work from the low-wage stream of the temporary program mentioned above
Consultation with agricultural stakeholders and agricultural partners in order to assess operational feasibility for further expanding the measure to agricultural workers’ family members.
For a period between January and October this year, authorities in Canada have issued more than 645,000 work permits, which means four times more compared to a total of 163,000 work permits issued during the same period last year.
In this regard, Randy Boissonnault, the Minister of Tourism as well as Associate Minister of Finance, said that among the biggest challenges that the country is facing is the labour shortage.
“Labour is the number one challenge facing Canada’s tourism sector as we position ourselves for post-pandemic growth. Today, our government is bringing in innovative, family-based solutions to resolve this issue and help our tourism partners grow to meet the global demand for Canadian experiences from coast to coast to coast,” Boissonnault pointed out in this regard.
The Minister stressed that the country is creating innovative solutions in order to deal with the current situation.
