The Canadian authorities have revealed that the employment rate in October was at a record high among immigrants.
According to Statistics Canada, immigrants made up the largest share of the population in over 150 years in 2021 (23.0 percent), suggesting that employment has increased over the years too.
Results from the Labor Force Survey for the month of October have highlighted that most immigrants have succeeded in finding employment in Canada and filling a wide range of job vacancies across the country.
“The employment rate of immigrants aged 15 and older (62.2 percent) was at its highest level for the month of October since comparable data became available in the LFS in 2006,” the statement of Statistics Canada reads.
As stated in the survey, among immigrants that were admitted to Canada in the last five years, the employment rate, which stood at 70.7 percent in October 2022, was 5.6 percentage points higher than during the same month in 2019, VisaGuide.World reports.
Data further show that the majority of employment gains in October occurred among private sector employees (+0.6 percent) for the first time since March 2022. On the other hand, the number of employees in the public sector did not record any significant changes.
In addition to the above-mentioned, Statistics Canada points out that immigration contributed to 79.9 percent of the growth in Canada’s labor force.
Nonetheless, it has been emphasized that even though the number of immigrants being employed in Canada has increased, challenges remain, mainly regarding skill utilization.
From 2001 until 2016, the percentage of recent university-educated immigrants working in a job that required a university degree decreased and was below the proportion of those born in Canada. However, it has been explained that recent policy changes have been implemented in order to improve outcomes for new immigrants as well as to increase the responsiveness of immigration to labor market demand.

Commenting on the figures, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship of Canada, Sean Fraser, said that the plan to receive immigrants will help the country’s workforce in different sectors, including technology and health care, among others.
Moreover, Minister Fraser stressed that the country’s government is continuing the ambition by setting targets in the new level plans of around 465,000 permanent residents in 2023, around 485,000 in 2024, and another 500,000 in 2025.
